Bolsonaro arrested after being considered a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will have a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
