Congress Passes Bill to Make Public Epstein Records

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to a bill that will force the release of official records concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

The measure next heads to Donald Trump for his approval. The president indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Even though Trump has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would reveal specific data of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
