The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
