Powerful Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to stay indoors as severe gales strike the country.

Severe winds attaining velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced officials to cancel over 100 flights, as reported by domestic outlets.

These gusts are impacting the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences mainly in the South Island, though authorities state that power was being slowly brought back.

Local media have indicated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.

Across Wellington, a man was lost his life after being struck by a wooden fragment at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights entering and leaving the metropolis have been cancelled because of the weather, whereas various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have announced a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.
