The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
